Why Can't I Get Cash for Scrap Metal?

Nobody legitimate will hand you notes for scrap — and that is exactly the point. Here is the law, the reason, and how proper payment works.

The Law

Cash for Scrap Has Been Illegal Since 2013

Section 12 of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 makes it an offence for a licensed dealer to pay cash for scrap metal. Legal payment is by non-transferable cheque or electronic bank transfer only — no notes, no coins, no "cash in hand", no exceptions for small loads or regulars.

This is not company policy and not negotiable. Any dealer offering cash is breaking the law, and any seller accepting it is dealing with someone unlicensed. That matters more than it sounds — see the red flags below.

Dealers must verify your identity with photo ID showing your address, and record every transaction. A dealer who waves ID away is waving the law away.

Expect transfer, same day
