Alloy wheels are cast aluminium, which puts them well above steel scrap per kilo — and with four wheels per car, a single set is a worthwhile load on its own. The golden rule: wheels are weighed as bare aluminium. Tyres, valves and clip-on lead wheel weights come off first, or they drag the grade down and add dead weight.

Preparing Wheels for the Best Price

Tyres off, always

A tyre weighs nearly as much as the wheel and is worth nothing as scrap metal. Most tyre shops will pop them off cheaply if you cannot.

Check they are alloy

Pressed steel wheels look similar at a glance but pay steel rates. A fridge magnet settles it in seconds: sticks to steel, ignores aluminium.

Keep sets together

Four matching wheels in similar condition are the easiest load to grade. Kerb rash is cosmetic and fine; cracks and welds just need declaring.
